A spreadsheet works until three people need it at once, or until the person who built it leaves. These are the applications that replace it: multi-user, backed by a real database, and shaped around an existing workflow rather than asking everyone to change how they work.

Most of ours have come out of dairy genetics and herd improvement, where the data is messy, the decisions are consequential, and the people using the tool are not sitting at a desk.
